Are You Ready for a STIHL?

MS 171 is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 124.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Garbage straight from the dealer I was having a fence put in and needed to cut down 2 small trees. The dealer told me it was all serviced and ready for use out the door. The chain was binding on the very first cut, this thing couldn't make it through 6 inches of wood. I tried to adjust the tension but the tension screw was already stripped, the chain was hanging off the blade and couldn't be tightened any farther.I will never buy Stihl again, my leaf blower is ok but this thing is unforgivable.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Garbage out of the box. Dealer told me it was good to go as I needed to cut down 2 small trees that day.Chain binds up on first cut, tried to adjust tension and the screw was already stripped, chain hanging off the blade and it couldn't be tightened at all.Complete garbage.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great light weight saw for smaller jobs. Saw is a little under powered but works great for the small jobs ie limbing and small logs. Great value.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent saw This saw performs as per its design, it's easy to start and cuts well. I am completely satisfied with it and the dealer whom I bought it from.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Everything i expected and more.. After comparing the MS 171 to a couple others this one fit the bill the best.I didn't want a saw from a big box store, I wanted dealer support.I bought the saw a case and the oil, to double the warranty. I figured why not double up the warranty , I need oil any way.So I headed to the yard to clean up the fallen trees from the wind storm. I set the saw down, cranked it like the dealer showed me, and it did exactly what the dealer said it would .Fired right up.So I headed into the minor disaster and started carving up everything in my path.from small limbs to a couple tree`s about 9 or 10 inches across.Ripped right through everything.I set it down and restarted it several times. every time it re fired first pull. From some of the reviews I saw it was supposed to be underpowered. Totally not the case. The only time it bogged was when I was pushing down on it.just let the saw do the work.I couldn't have been more impressed, plenty of power, re fired every time.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Good for pruning only If you intend to do any cutting 4" or more, advise you to spend a bit more and get a commercial saw. Of course stihl does have the best small motors. I have many other products all work very very well. Would not buy this chain saw. Nutter hardware Ohio refused my exchange as well. Buyer be ware!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Saw. This is the best saw I have ever owned. I have owned Poulan, Homelite before and they didn't hold up to the work.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from The 171 I purchased is not very good, Len's Ace Hardware is worse. Difficult to start. Takes a while to warmup. Purchased from Len's and their return policy is very poor for power equipment. You may not return the product once you put gas and/or oil in the product. They actually put in both to start the product in the store. The young man doing this had a hard time starting the machine. Once I used the product I had a hard time starting the machine too and took a few starts to stay started. Went to exchange the product for the 180 model (my poor product is the 171), they would not. DO NOT PURCHASE FROM LEN'S ACE HARDWARD for this reason. Owned a 180 before and was very happy with that, this 171 is not very good at all.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best ever! I don't use a chain saw very often. But when I do I want it to work. My last one let me down too many times (brand omitted because I won't call it by its proper name) I bought this saw and it started right up and worked great. I used it a couple weekends in a row and I wore out before it ever slowed down! I'm looking at buying Stihl for all my power tools from now on. The guy that waited on me at Aker's Hardware was very knowledgeable about the saw too. It's been a great experience.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great saw havnt had it very long but its working great so far
Date published: 2017-04-06
Rated 4 out of 5 by from I like it so far! So far, so good, Easy to start and capable of trees up to 12", but it's a little tough on this little beaver, so best uses are limbing, smalller trees, etc. Lighter than my older H-44, but don't know if that is a fair comparison since a lot more plastic is used in late model saws? Hope it holds up for the long term...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Light saw, steady workhorse Light saw for all day cutting! Perfect for the weekend homeowner who isn't going professional. Not a power-hungry saw but keep the blade sharp and let it do its job and it does great. Great for dropping small 8" trees, limbing, and use as a tool. Anything bigger, get a 311. Always easy to start. Easy to clean and maintains. Buy this before ANY saw at Lowes, even the bigger ones. Never a fuss or too much work to maintain. Stihl: always reliability, rugged and built by great people who know who their building the saws for!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Starts great and runs great It works well everytime i use it. It doesnt ever have a problem starting. I use my ms171 for wood carvings. It cuts well and is very light and maneuverable. I have the 16 inch bar on my saw. Do to the power of the saw i would recommend getting the 14" bar. Overall has been a great saw.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from This is a great little saw. Well worth what it cost Saw is easy to start hot or cold. Runs very well. Great on wood 12 in or smaller diameter. Could use more power on anything bigger than 12 in. Great value for $$. I would buy this saw again in a minute

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ms171 Good little saw. Used it all day no problems. Starts real easy and has plenty of power for its size. Real glad I made this decision to buy this saw. I put 0.50 bar and chain on it and makes a big difference in how it cuts too. Happy trimming.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from tough little saw that hits its niche well We were clearing nearly an acre of forest that was far too close to the house. I bought this as my first chainsaw, since my brothers-in-law were doing the main clearing work with their massive saws, but I needed to clean up debris and cut up the wood (that wasn't going to the mill as logs) for firewood. This little saw "saw" far more use than I'd have thought when I bought it. I've also used it to tackle some firewood rounds that were about 20" in diameter (yeah, it's not best suited for that and tends to bog down, but eventually it chewed through). In hindsight, a larger saw would've been nice, but I'll not regret purchasing the 171. For delimbing the trees after they are felled, this thing is perfect. It's so lightweight that you don't get tired from holding the saw at the weird angles you need for delimbing. I also found it perfect for chewing through the dense underbrush that had grown up around the house. I used it to take down some small 6-8" diameter trees with no problem, and it works well for firewood rounds 14" and smaller.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good product Great motor and handling but the chain that comes with it isn't worth the metal it's made of. Cut half a cord of wood so far and blade is full. I guess that is normal I was just hoping it would last longer before it needed attention.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this saw I use this saw at work . Had to buy one for home. Great saw for the money.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy starting; runs great! This saw starts very easily, normally on first pull (after initial cold start - and even the cold start is easier than previous saws I have used). My previous saw (not Stihl) started good cold, but was a real pain to start after it was hot and had been left a few minutes.Highly recommend this saw to anyone that wants to "saw" as opposed to "crank".

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stilhl Crazy This saw starts easily, runs smoothly, and cuts quickly. Easy, smooth, and quick are three good adjectives to describe this chainsaw. A-1 Rental in Sand Springs, OK did a great job of setting up and registering my saw. I am pleased.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best! I'm a woman 60 years old, I find this machine very friendly and very easy to start since you realize how to start it even when you don't use it all times of the year and in winter with low temperatures. If you have your saw in good condition you can easily cut any wood and tree quick and easy. I cut wood for my fireplace end other uses for my garden. I also use Stihl FS 250 to keep my garden free from weed. I tried another cheaper machines but I threw them away because I couldn't rely on them either to start or to work in friendly environment. Both Stihl machines are my best tools since I depend on them to keep me happy!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very dependable I have had the 171 for a year now. Originally bought it to scrap trees that fell in a big storm in SW FL. Handled the job with ease. The chain does require sharpening after a full day of use but what chainsaw doesn't? As an entry level saw, it works great for small jobs like the one I had. Wouldn't recommend this saw if you're consistently cutting trees larger than 1' in diameter. My favorite feature is the reliable motor running the saw. Fires right up after not running for 5 months. Love my saw.
